The Biosphere Reserve

of Sian Ka'an

In the Mayan language, Sian Ka'an means 'where the sky is born' or 'origin of the sky.' Its coast is the third largest among Mexico's protected areas.

As well as boasting some of the most spectacular and pristine beaches in the world, this protected national treasure comprises approximately 1.3 million acres in total, spanning 120 kilometers from north to south, covering almost one third of the Caribbean coast of Mexico.

The Biosphere Reserve, renowned for its natural uncontaminated beauty, contains tropical forests, mangroves, and shimmering lagoons, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. It provides a habitat for remarkably rich flora and fauna, comprising more than 300 species of birds.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the reserve holds significant global importance for its conservation efforts.
